Optosort supplies sensor and processing equipment that scans the object (typically an ore particle) processes the image based on a pre-programmed set or criteria and, if selected rejects the object using a very fast impulse of compressed air. This separates the incoming stream into product and waste streams.

In situations where colour separation is not possible, it is frequently possible to discriminate between product and waste using NIR (near infrared) imaging. The discrimination criteria are then based on the spectra reflected from the particles.

 

In the example below, white dolomite can be separated from white calcite using NIR.
